Origin: Central and South America Chicken weed, also known as “sanguinaria”, “caroca” or “maroon purslane”, is used in traditional medicine for its medicinal properties. It has been used to treat digestive ailments, liver problems, diarrhea, gastrointestinal disorders and muscle pain. It has also been used as an antihemorrhagic and to control fever.
To prepare an infusion of chicken weed, it is recommended to place a tablespoon of the plant in a cup of boiling water and let it steep for a few minutes. It can also be prepared as a decoction by boiling the plant in water for 3 to 5 minutes.
